EAM Jaishankar Inaugurates Community Development Projects in Maldives

External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and Maldives’ Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer inaugurated High Impact Community Development Projects in Male on Friday. The two ministers also exchanged Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) as part of their ongoing cooperation.

EAM Jaishankar highlighted the productive discussions he held with Minister Zameer, emphasizing the broad scope of their engagement. In a post on social media platform X, Jaishankar mentioned that the discussions covered development partnerships, capacity building, bilateral and regional security, trade, and digital cooperation. He also announced the joint inauguration of six High Impact Projects, which focus on street lighting, mental health, children’s speech therapy, and special education. Additionally, Jaishankar witnessed the signing of an MoU between the National Payments Corporation of India and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade of Maldives to introduce a digital payment system in the Maldives.

Jaishankar further welcomed the renewal of an MoU between the National Centre for Good Governance and the Civil Services Commission of Maldives, which will enable the training of an additional 1,000 civil service officers.

Maldives’ Foreign Affairs Minister Moosa Zameer praised the meeting, describing it as a significant milestone in India’s ongoing commitment to community empowerment in the Maldives. In his post on X, Zameer highlighted the inauguration of six community projects supported by Indian grant assistance. These projects include the Mental Health Unit in R. Ungoofaaru, the Child Development Centre in HDh. Kulhudhuffushi, and Inclusive Education Support Units in GDh. Thinadhoo, L. Gan, and HA. Dhidhdhoo. Additionally, street lighting projects were launched in the islands of Th. Thimarafushi, Th. Veymandoo, and GA. Kondey. Zameer emphasized that these projects directly benefit local communities by enriching lives and enhancing well-being.

The inauguration underscored India’s dedication to promoting socioeconomic development in the Maldives.

Jaishankar is currently on an official three-day visit to the Maldives, scheduled from August 9 to August 11. This visit aims to further strengthen bilateral ties between the two nations.
